About Us

Eric

I didn’t start drinking wine until I was about 25 years old, and back then, the extent of my tastings usually surrounded labels such as Lancers, Mateus and occasionally a glass of Cold Duck. While I never stooped so low as to try a glass of Boone’s Farm or Ripple in my early wine years, this was Arizona in the late 70’s, and the drink of choice was always beer or an occasional scotch and soda, that’s it. Then I met my future wife, so in a sense, this web site is dedicated to her.

While she enjoyed some of the heaviest of reds, I started out slowly. It didn’t take long, however, for me to work my way through White Zinfandels (the proverbial “blush” wines) and on to Sauvignon Blancs and full-bodied white Burgundies. Before long I was trying Chianti’s (remember those 3-foot tall bottles?), Merlots, and even an occasional Cabernet Sauvignon. Back then, the wines I enjoyed most were almost exclusively from California, Italy, France and Germany, due more to availability rather than choice. The county in Georgia I lived in at the time (mid-80’s) was dry and wine selection was limited.

Interestingly, all along the path of my self-education on wine, I was always running into individuals who were either already very knowledgeable and eager to help me learn about wines, or wanted to learn more themselves, just like me. My wife’s boss, a vendor of mine from Texas, my own boss from Southern California, and a lawyer-friend in Wisconsin, were all wine “educators” in their own rite.

However, the real turning point in my wine education, was when seven of us (all men) decided to form a wine-tasting group. Our members had all the bases covered – a lawyer, a dentist, an OB/GYN, a financial planner, a company president, and two “regular” businessmen. Only two of us had more than a basic comprehension of wines at the time, but the experience was so enjoyable, we stayed together for nearly three years. Today, we still find time to let each other know about an incredible wine value, and occasionally get together to pop open and share a special bottle. I hope you enjoy this web site and also develop some special relationships through your wine enjoyment.
