South America

While the Spanish introduced viticulture to the Americas in Mexico in 1521, it quickly spread through the activities of the conquistadors into Chile, Argentina and Peru in less than fifty years. Brazil and Uruguay followed much later. While the goal of the conquistadors was to plunder gold for their Spanish king, not to spread wine making, nerly 500 years later South America had become one of the fastest growing and most prolific wine continents in the world.
