2006 Wente Morning Fog Chardonnay
Wow, is this one a pleasant surprise! Many California chardonnays turn out to be flat and flabby, buttery, overly oaked, and lacking crisp acidity. Think just the opposite of this with Wente’s Morning Fog chardonnay. The name Morning Fog comes from the cooling clouds that come off the east San Francisco Bay to cover the Livermore Valley.
The 2006 is crisp and clean with a medium-bodied mouth-feel. It has pleasing aromas and tastes of grapefruit, lemon blossoms, guava (or is that papaya?), and pears. Don’t look for the heavy characteristic oak and vanilla in this one; it’s just not there. But there is a slight apple and vanilla cream essence rising from the glass after a pour. Your taste buds will dance in your mouth with a long, refreshing finish to this wine. And your wallet will dance too at the price – less than $12.
Enjoy! |
