Mexico

While grape growing for wine-producing purposes has yet to really catch on in this country of beer and liquor drinkers, there is potential. Strange, because in 1524, all land owners who were given Indians for forced labor, were required under Spanish law, to plant 1,000 vines per hundred Indians. With the recent influx of foreigners in the form of Spanish brandy houses, the sparkling wine producer Freixenet and Wente Brothers of California, new life has been created and hopefully will grow over the next decade. While the focus has been on the Baja California area, the higher altitude vineyards of central Mexico are showing the most promise.
