New York Until as recently as the 1980s, one would be hard pressed to find a New York state wine listed in any restaurant in Manhattan. Northern New York was thought to be too cold and Long Island smacked too much of a weekend hobby. While wine making started in the 1850s, using native American grapes, the wine revolution in New York actually took hold in the 1950s. A new generation of winegrowers successfully introduced Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Blanc, and Chardonnay in the Finger Lakes and Hudson Valley. In 1973, the first commercial vines were planted on Long Island, nearly 50% of which are Chardonnay, and now produce 90% of all New York state’s premium wines. Upstate New York
