Ohio Ohio has about fifty wineries and a wine-making history in the Chautauqua area that dates back to 1825. Here, hybrids are ousting American grapes and experiments with European vines are encouraging. The low-lying islands along the south (Lake Erie) lake shore near Sandusky offer the best potential.
