Virginia Virginia offers the most excitement and potential as a wine producing state. It has more vines than Long Island and three times as many wineries and its wines history dates back to Thomas Jefferson. There are five AVAs in place but the great concentration of plantings is on the east slope of the Blue Ridge Mountains near Charlottesville. The heart of the region is Monticello.
